The word gifts are given to enable us to manifest the nature, action and purposes of God. The New Testament mentions 6 word gifts: teaching, encouragement, apostleship, leadership, pastoring, and evangelism. The word gifts are foundational to the building and health of the church. This is why they are called “first gifts” in 1 Corinthians 12:28. This doesn’t mean first in importance, but first in priority because these gifts are essential to the establishment of a church. It is important that these gifts be represented among the elected leaders of the church. No one leader can possess all these gifts, so it is important that the church be led by a plurality of leaders that represent a healthy cross-section of these spiritual gifts. It is important that Christians learn to operate within the limits of their spiritual gifts, and become inter-dependent on others with different spiritual gifts. It only produces self-harm and harm to the church to try to become something you are not created and gifted to become.
