The Surpassing Greatness of Jesus: Entering God’s Rest
Rest is not inactivity but engaging in activities that energize and reinvigorate us. The reason rest is universally sought is because of the relentless demands, pressures, and problems of life. Life depletes us physically, emotionally and mentally, so rest is needed so we can be replenished. An important and major theme in the Bible is God’s rest. God rested after 6 days of creation activity meaning He ceased his creative work and began to rule over His creation. When God ruled over His creation, everything in creation came under the blessing of God’s rest. For humans this meant having the deepest needs of our heart met, living under God’s protection and provisions. This also meant humans could live in freedom and joy without having to struggle, strive and fight through life. But when humans decided to be their own masters, we lost God’s rest. But now through the Gospel of Jesus we can enter God’s rest again, resting from the works of the law, resting from the guilt and shame of our sins, and from the work of trying to earn God’s approval and acceptance.
