Hell: What it reveals about the human heart
Bible Text: Luke 16:19-31 | Speaker: Pastor Peter Kenniphaas | The subject of judgment and hell is largely avoided and rejected today, yet Jesus spoke frequently about the reality of a final judgment and hell. Jesus never used the doctrine of judgement and hell to threaten people into submission, but rather used it to get people to consider the deeper issues of the human heart, and what ultimately leads a person to hell. Jesus shows through the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus what results when something other than God becomes the center of the human heart. The Rich Man’s love of money set him on a destructive path that ultimately left him with no name and no identity. When “self” is placed before God, we ultimately become more selfish and self-centered. Hell is selfishness realized and experienced where we will live alone with ourselves in a God-less and Christ-less eternity. The reality of judgment and hell reveals the extent of God’s love in that Jesus experienced judgement and hell in our place so that we could receive heaven as a free gift of grace. It is knowing the ultimate price Jesus paid for our salvation that leads us to make Him the center of our heart.
