Growing in Righteousness
Bible Text: Ephesians 4:25-32 | Preacher: Pastor Peter Kenniphaas | Series: The Glory of God in Christian Community
After Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead He commanded that his grave clothes be removed because his grave clothes were no longer appropriate to his living condition (John 11:44). As Christians, we have been raised up with Christ to new life (Ephesians 2:6). As a result of this new reality, we must put off our grave clothes, and put on clothing that corresponds to our new reality of being alive in Christ. This is the main idea in Ephesians 4:25-32. We are given 5 examples of things we should put off and things we should put on. These 5 examples are based on the reality that in Christ we have already put off the old self, and put on the new self (Ephesians 4:22-24). The reference to the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) and Satan (Ephesians 4:27) remind us of spiritual powers that are at work behind the scene. The Spirit leads us to live in accordance with the new self. Satan deceives and temps us to live in accordance with the old self. The key to putting on characteristics of the new self is knowing that in Christ we are a new creation. This means identifying the lies of Satan and replacing them with the truth of all that you are, and all that you have in Christ.
