The Gifting of the Spirit and the Supremacy of Love

Passage: 1 Corinthians 13

Bible Text: 1 Corinthians 13 | Speaker: Pastor Peter Kenniphaas | Series: Understanding Spiritual Gifts | The church of Jesus is to be a Spirit-filled community of believers who are living in the power of the Holy Spirit. But how is spiritual fullness to be evidenced in a church? In the ancient church of Corinth, they believed spiritual fullness was evidenced through spiritual gifts, knowledge and wisdom. But what 1 Corinthians 13 reveals is that spiritual fullness is primarily evidenced through loving actions. In other words, the fullness of the Spirit is revealed more in the fruit of the Spirit than in the gifting of the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 13 teaches the supremacy of love—that without love, our work and our lives will amount to nothing. The most important question a person who is concerned with the fullness of the Spirit must ask is, “Am I growing in the love of God shown in Jesus Christ?”
